Mirela Nicoleta Rusu, an athlete of Romanian origin settled in Italy, died after being hit by a car during a cycling training held near Palermo. Italian authorities have opened an investigation.
The accident took place in the morning of June 21, in the town of Pioppo, near Monreale, when a group of cyclists who were traveling towards Palermo he was hit by a car that entered the opposite direction during a prohibited overtaking maneuver.

Two other cyclists were injured, one of them being transported to the hospital, but the doctors stated that his life is not in danger.
The Italian police opened an investigation to establish the exact circumstances of the tragedy and the possible responsibilities of the driver involved.
“According to the first information provided by the Italian authorities, the driver of a Fiat 500X overtook several vehicles in an area with a continuous line, entering the opposite direction and hitting the group of cyclists,” it is shown on the website of the Federation.
