Los Angeles prosecutors have charged Nick Reiner with murder in the deaths of his parents, Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele.
Nick Reiner is charged with two counts of premeditated murder under special circumstances, said District Attorney Nathan Hochman, quoted by the BBC.
He could be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty if convicted. He will be brought before the court to be officially presented with the charges and to plead, after receiving the medical certificate from the prison officials, said Hochman.
The charges come two days after the couple was found dead in their home in Brentwood, California, with multiple stab wounds.
Impeachment also includes o “special reference” to the fact that Reiner used a knife.
In a press conference Tuesday, Hochman said no decision had been made on whether prosecutors would seek the death penalty.
The 32-year-old suspect was also accused of using “a dangerous and deadly weapon, more precisely a knife”. He was expected to appear before a judge on Tuesday for a formal arraignment hearing. The district attorney said that will be scheduled at a later date.
Rob Reiner has directed several famous firms in a variety of genres, including “This is Spinal Tap”, “Misery” and “A Few Good Men”.
Michele Singer Reiner was an actress, photographer and producer and the founder of Reiner Light, a photography agency and production company.
LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said at the press conference: “This case is heartbreaking and deeply personal, not just for the Reiner family and their loved ones, but for the entire city. We send our deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragedy”he said.
Asked if the murder weapon was recovered, Hochman said that this will be known in court. Officials said the autopsies, which have not yet been completed, will determine the exact cause, manner and time of death.
