Gică Hagi (61 years old) is the new coach of the Romanian national football team. At the press conference, the president Răzvan Burleanu said that the selector has a contract valid for 4 years. However, the common presentation shirt says something else: 2028, meaning only two years of the contract.
The inconsistency could consist in the fact that Hagi has a 2+2 year contract, and will remain at the helm of the tricolors if they secure qualification to the final continental tournament.
The “King” announced that the goal is to win: first the first match, then the Nations League group, after which he aims to qualify for the European Championship, where Romania was the last time in 2024.
Low salary, big bonuses
It is Hagi’s second term in the locker room of the tricolors, after a short first experience in 2001, when he missed qualifying for the World Cup in South Korea and Japan in the draw with Slovenia.
“The King” will have the same salary at the national team as Mircea Lucescu: 27,000 euros per month, say some sources. This means that the annual salary will be 324,000 euros. However, two performance bonuses are attractive.
The qualification of the Romanian national team at EURO 2028 will bring a premium of 300,000 euros. Basically, a bonus equivalent to a year’s salary. Also, Romania’s qualification for the 2030 World Cup will bring Hagi a bonus of 500,000 euros, the cited source also writes.
