Between May 7-10, Classy Film Festival returns to the Happy Cinema cinemas in Colosseum Mall Bucharest and Agora Mall Arad, with a new edition dedicated to the rediscovery of classic films in a contemporary context.
The festival offers the public a selection of emblematic titles from the history of cinema, united by the theme “rebels” – the courage to defy norms, ask uncomfortable questions and change perspectives.
“Films that had the courage to challenge conventions”
“Now in its fourth edition, our festival continues to grow and expand its community. The theme of rebellion reflects the very essence of these films; they are productions that, at their time, had the courage to challenge conventions and break new ground. We want to make them as accessible as possible and bring them closer to today’s audiences in a natural and relevant way.” said Diana Cercel, president of the Proiector Association.

“Artistic riots that become a dialogue with the present”
“Classy Film Festival is an invitation to rediscover cinema. The films in the program were, in their time, forms of rebellion and artistic courage, and today they can become moments of reflection and dialogue. We want to offer viewers an open context, in which these stories can be felt and discussed, regardless of their previous experience with classic film”added Ecaterina Mateescu, representative of Happy Cinema.
‘Rebellion’ on the big screen: from The Matrix to Blade Runner
This year’s selection brings together films that have profoundly influenced film culture and the way audiences understand reality, society and identity.
Included titles include:
-
The Matrix (1999), which redefined reporting on technology and reality
-
Fight Club (1999), symbol of challenging the consumer society
-
Reservoir Dogs (1992), landmark of independent cinema
-
Blade Runner (1982), exploration of identity and humanity
-
The Great Dictator (1940), political and social criticism
-
Rebel Without a Cause (1955), symbol of youth alienation and rebellion
The program also includes titles such as La Dolce Vita, Bonnie and Clyde, Gilda, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly or Spellbound, each with a significant impact on film history.
“It’s not about nostalgia, it’s about reconnection”
The organizers emphasize that the festival aims to overcome the idea that classic film is exclusively for moviegoers and to transform the cinema into a meeting space between generations.
“Classy Film Festival is not about nostalgia, it’s about reconnecting: with the films, with the stories and with the experience of seeing them together, on the big screen“, the organizers say.
Special opening event
Before the official start, the public is invited to a Warm-Up event on April 25, from 18:00, at the Happy Cinema cinemas in Bucharest and Arad. The film A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), directed by Elia Kazan, will be screened.
Classy Film Festival is organized by the Proiector Association, an organization dedicated to the promotion of visual arts and cinema education. The event aims to facilitate the general public’s access to classic films and to stimulate cultural education through cinema.
