Work has finally begun on the first regional emergency hospital in Romania, the one in Iasi, built in the last 30 years. It will be the largest medical unit in Moldova and costs a little over 700,000,000 euros, money from European funds, but also from a loan

We are talking about a 120,000 square meter hospital, we are talking about 20 operating rooms, we are talking about a generation of young doctors who have to train, learn to work to these standards“, says Alexandru Rafila, the Minister of Health.

The Iasi Regional Emergency Hospital (SRU) will have 850 beds, plus 60 beds for the emergency reception unit and 40 beds for day hospitalization. For the first year of operation, 47,500 cases of continuous hospitalization, 100,000 emergencies and 258,000 outpatient services are estimated.

SRU will take over the responsibilities of the “Sfântul Spiridon” Hospital in Iași, but also part of the medical services currently offered by four of the hospitals subordinate to the Iași County Council, namely the “Elena Doamna” Paediatrics, Neurosurgery, Pneumology and Maternity Hospitals .

“The most important project in health”

It is the most important health project in Romania, I think of all time, because this hospital, which will host, let's say, a population of over 3.2 million inhabitants of the North-East region, to which is also added the Republic Moldova and I suspect that it will also come from Ukraine, it is the largest investment in the field of over 680 million euros”, declares Mihai Chirica, the mayor of the Municipality of Iași.

The surface of the land on which the Regional Emergency Hospital from Iasi will be located is 120,000 square meters. The medical unit will have a basement, ground floor and five floors. A helipad will be built on the roof of the building.

Promises did not save lives

The project was promised since 2007, with Romania's entry into the European Union, then postponed to 2023 by another half year. Last year, more than one hundred thousand patients arrived at the Iași Emergency Department.

I think 20% of them needed interventions in the other hospitals. And I mean serious cases. Any transport, movements with a stretcher, in the car, from the car, on the roads means a greater risk for the patient“, emphasizes Prof. Dr. Diana Cimpoeșu, chief physician of UPU-SMURD Iași.

We are prepared to provide appropriate training for all the specialists who will work in this hospital under the conditions of an infrastructure that corresponds to the years in which we live. We are talking about a generation of young doctors who have to train, learn, work to these standards“, says the university professor. Dr. Viorel Scripcariu, rector of the “Grigore T. Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Iasi.
