Before today's meeting, I invited to the Government of Romania the team of lawyers who won the Roșia Montană trial for Romania. I thanked them on behalf of the Romanians for the way they fought in this process, sometimes even with the decisions of some former prime ministers during all these difficult years of the process”, said Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, Thursday morning, before the Executive meeting.

The Prime Minister emphasized that he is convinced “that absolutely all Romanians are proud, like me, that we have such world-class professionals”, again conveying to the lawyers the gratitude of the Government of Romania and the Romanians for the victory in the Roșia Montana case.

Romania was represented in this major process by the Romanian Law Firm Leaua Damcali Deaconu Păunescu – LDDP and the Swiss firm LALIVE SA.

We are happy that we avoided Romanian citizens bearing a burden of more than 6 billion dollars“, said lawyer Crenguța Leaua, the leader of the team of Romanian lawyers in this trial, in an interview for “Adevărul”.

Romania won on Friday, March 8, in Washington, the trial in the Roșia Montană file, although it was expected since February 10. The ruling by the World Bank's International Center for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) came after nearly nine years of trials and hearings.

The Romanian state will no longer pay any compensation, moreover, Romania having to recover from Gabriel Resources more than 9.5 million dollars in court costs.

However, Gabriel Resources announced that it has only two million dollars in funds. The shares of the Canadian company fell sharply after the publication of the verdict in the Roșia Montană case.

Roșia Montană was included in the UNESCO Heritage in 2021. However, the decision regarding mining is a political one. Besides, the politicians blame each other. The prime minister said that Dacian Cioloş should not comment on the Roşia Montană file, arguing that he signed for the entry into UNESCO in the last minutes of the prime minister's mandate. For his part, former Prime Minister Dacian Cioloș asked the PSD to take responsibility for the state's loss to the Gabriel Resources company.
