Siegfried Mureșan, the candidate supported by PNL, USR and UDMR for the position of prime minister, launched a series of attacks on Sorin Grindeanu on Monday, June 29. The liberal MEP claims that the former prime minister cannot regain the trust of European partners because of the role he had in the adoption of GEO 13 and the poor performances of the PSD government.
Mureșan states, in a post on Facebook, that the OUG 13 episode would continue to affect Grindeanu’s credibility in the eyes of European leaders:
“Trust at European level is earned only by deeds. Never by words alone. The European Union will never forget that the Social Democratic Party, under the leadership of Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu, tried to legalize political corruption through GEO 13. The images of the hundreds of thousands of people who took to the streets to defend European values, rules and the rule of law will remain imprinted in the minds of European partners for a very long time.”
Criticism of the Ciolacu government
Mureșan also referred to the activity of the former executive led by Marcel Ciolacu, of which Grindeanu was a part, citing the delays in the PNRR, the lack of reforms and the high budget deficit.
“Another moment of distrust was the delay in the implementation of the PNRR, the flight of reforms and the 9.3% deficit of Marcel Ciolacu, with Sorin Grindeanu a member of the Government”, wrote, in the same post, the candidate supported by PNL, USR and UDMR for the position of prime minister.
However, the MEP claims that, in the last year, the Government of Romania has managed to regain the trust of its European partners by respecting the commitments assumed:
“Confidence was regained in the last year through the results, by the fact that the Government of Romania, this year, did what it promised, stopped the waste and respected its commitments from the PNRR. It proves that payment request 4 from the PNRR was adopted immediately and in full“.
Mureșan ends his message with a direct attack on Grindeanu:
“Sorin Grindeanu will always be the Prime Minister of OUG 13, unable to win confidence for Romania“.
The new attacks of the liberal come in the context in which the negotiations for the formation of the new Government reached a deadlock again, after the leaders of the parties of the former coalition failed to agree on the future prime minister.
On Sunday, Siegfried Muresan stated that many of the social democratic leaders are, in reality, anti-European.
While PNL, USR and UDMR go with the version of the MEP Siegfried Mureșan, PSD has formalized its support for Sorin Grindeanu,
