Romanians will have, at the end of May and the beginning of June 2026, a first extended weekend of the summer, consisting of three consecutive days off, in the context of the Pentecost and Children’s Day celebrations.
The period May 30 – June will bring a mini-holiday for most employees who work regularly, from Monday to Friday. The first and second days of Pentecost are marked on Sunday, May 31, and Monday, June 1, which also coincides with Children’s Day, both of which are non-working days established by law.
Although the overlap of the two holidays does not generate an additional day off, employees will benefit from an extended weekend consisting of Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Employees in essential fields, such as health, transport, public order or emergency services, can be scheduled to work during this period, and will receive compensatory time off or salary increases, according to the legislation in force.
In pre-university education, the beginning of June will also bring a fragmented week. On Monday, June 1, classes are suspended, and Friday, June 5, is Teacher’s Day, a day off for students and teachers. Thus, didactic activities will take place only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Other days off in 2026
The 2026 calendar includes a total of 17 public holidays.
The next important day off after Pentecost will be August 15 – Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which will fall on a Saturday, without generating an extended weekend.
The end of the year, however, brings new periods of free days, with Saint Andrew (November 30) and Romania’s National Day (December 1).
