Courier tip, hot topic. “Does my boss give me extra for doing my job?” vs. “We go to the doctor. And what salaries do they have…”

How much do you leave to the courier who delivered your order and how much does this service cost you in a month was the topic that stirred Romanians on Facebook. What the couriers say.

A proposed discussion topic on a public Facebook group dedicated to optimal family budget management garnered hundreds of comments. A member of the group wanted to know how much the group members leave to the courier who brings their order and how much such an expense amounts to in a month.

The opinions were sometimes extreme, and the couriers also entered the discussion, who explained that sometimes they have to respond to requests that have nothing to do with the tasks in the job description.

“When you buy eggs, milk or products directly from the country do you leave a tip?!”

Romanians take many things into account before taking extra money out of their pockets. Many say that they order on the Internet precisely to avoid certain costs, so they have no intention of “making money on apples.” Others, on the other hand, say that because they end up saving money, sometimes just because when they order online they don't buy things they don't actually need, as they do in the store, the tip offered to the courier doesn't mean much much at the end of the month.

Some customers reward couriers for the effort to climb to the upper floors in buildings without elevators, others for coming at the requested time or for delivering very heavy packages. Others, on the contrary, say that they take care to prepare the exact amount, because “the boss doesn't pay me either because I hand in the report on time”, or they pay everything online and then they don't have to worry about it anymore.

“I don't leave anything at the courier. The courier has a salary that he receives for his job. A lot of people leave tips in a lot of places, but you know what I noticed? When you buy eggs, milk or produce directly from the country….. do you leave a tip?! If you take from those who bring you weekly or occasionally products from their own production, leave 10 lei?!

You get a box with 10 eggs plus milk, maybe cheese and leave a 5 or 10 lei tip?!”asks a member of the group.

“We give to doctors, and what are their salaries… The poor courier, with a low salary, doesn't really have anything to receive”, notes another member of the group.

“Everyone has their salary related to their years of study. A doctor has 23+ years of schooling. A courier can have a quiet 12. It was everyone's choice,” continue the discussion. “You did not understand. The doctor has a very good salary and still receives consistent “attentions””the commentator reinforces his opinion.

Any kind of “attention” given to a doctor should be pure gratitude. For restoring your health. Or, in some cases, you escaped death. The courier brings a package, it takes 1 minute. It's an extremely bad comparison between the two jobs”, another member of the group intervenes.

“The doctor doesn't offer anything either, he chose that job and he should do it with passion regardless of the situation. Unfortunately, tipping at the doctors is also unfortunate, only in Romania do we see something like this”the spirits are stirred even more.

“Please, don't teach the couriers any more!”

Another member of the group complains that he is frequently asked to go down to collect his package, even though he has paid for delivery to the door.

“I'm begging you, don't teach the couriers any more and go down in front of the block and take the parcels from them. My address is in front of the door, not in front of the block. There are already some who are calling you to go down the boulevard”draws the attention of another member of the attention group.

The comment prompts other members of the group to share their antics.

I was tricked by a jerk when I was 7-8 months pregnant. I went down thinking I had a package of baby things to pick up, but he had actually brought me two packages and the second one was very heavy. He also saw me with my stomach in my mouth and put both parcels in my arms and left, he didn't even bother to help me to the elevator. Then I searched and discovered that others have suffered and there is also a law in this sense. From then on I knew what to say every time they called me down to pick up my package. Very simply, I tell him that he is obliged by law to come to the address and if he doesn't want to, all he has to do is take the package back to the headquarters and I will make a complaint. I think I only used this line once, since then no one has suggested I go down. And with a baby after me now I'd really turn into a dragon if he had the guts to tell me to get off. I leave them a tip of 5-10 lei, depending on the weight of the package. If it's something easy, I don't leave anything”, a lady revealed.

You would be surprised to see what salaries they have, high salaries of over 4,000-5,000 lei/month. There are all kinds of announcements, in which their salaries are also written”is another opinion.

I pay the shipping, I want the package at the door. Otherwise I would go to the store alone. Shipping larger than order sometimes”reasons someone else why what is firm in requests.

Other people talk about how much couriers have to carry every day, many parcels weighing tens of kilograms each, so they should be paid for their service. Others, however, are categorical: “OK, aren't they heavy for me too? Maybe that's why I ordered, not to carry them anymore”.

“I was asked why I don't install a delivered washing machine”

And couriers have stories that stir heated opinions.

“And the husband is a courier and goes up with every package, not just 20-30, sometimes even 100, because he doesn't have the patience to wait for everyone until they get dressed and get off, to wait for them in the car. Instead of standing for 5 minutes after a customer, in 2 minutes he was up and delivering and he doesn't complain about his legs, but he has days when he is clearly tired from so much running. I say that at his age he is doing well with exercise and he really likes what he is doing. Unfortunately, some customers would rather let him wait outside the door sometimes and look for a lei to give him than tip him a lei, that's how stingy they are. He even said to a customer: listen, I'm not staying here for 10 minutes looking for money, let me put a leu from me. The man had 5 lei, but he didn't want to give him 4, and he was looking for a lei so he wouldn't have any extra money. I always leave a tip for the pizza, the courier, the waiter, I know how much it means to them”, explains a courier's wife.

I deliver what the man pays for delivery to the door, but the easy box parcels that are too big and do not fit, Shein parcels, temu, for which the delivery to the door is not paid, I do not do it.

And the tipping phase, I don't know who came up with this, you give the tip to the courier, hairdresser, mechanic, etc. if you want, don't write anywhere that it is mandatory.

Personally, I don't expect something like this from all clients, but neither should the client ask for favors like this – come after 16/17 /18/19 because that's when I get home; please come to another address that is not in your area and you lose another hour on the way; come on Saturday/holiday when I'm at home but you're working; come on the third day with the package, you see, God, I made the wrong number/I didn't answer the other day/I was out of the country; put that fridge into the kitchen with ease, although the delivery is to the door/gate (or in my case I was asked why I don't install a delivered washing machine) etc.”a courier tells in turn.
