MEP Rareș Bogdan stated, on Wednesday, in a televised interview, that if the PSD does not support the PNL leader, Nicolae Ciucă, in the presidential elections, the liberals will appeal to the right-wing formations, Nicolae Ciucă previously stated that the PNL will have own candidate in the presidential elections.

“The PNL candidate will win the presidential election. The entire Romanian right will be behind him if we do not go with a joint candidacy with the PSD. The moment we fail to reach a tandem solution with those from the PSD, in case they do not accept Nicolae Ciucă as a candidate, we will start discussions with all the forces claiming to be right-wing in order to obtain their support for General Nicolae Ciucă. It is natural to do this, there is nothing abnormal, our behavior is open and transparent“, said Rareș Bogdan, on DIGI 24, when asked if the PNL candidate can win the presidential elections.
Asked if this would create problems for the government, Rareș Bogdan replied: “Who shall we govern with? We cannot govern with the right-wing parties, which are fragmented“.
Ciucă: PNL will have its own candidate in the presidential elections
The president of the PNL, Nicolae Ciucă, declared on Wednesday that the PNL will have its own candidate in the presidential elections.
“The PNL will have its own candidate in the presidential elections and all these scenarios, as is normal in political life and public debate, delight the analysis, but now, when we are discussing, this approach will not change – the PNL will have its own candidate“, said Ciucă, at the PNL headquarters.
Asked about the fact that the leader of the PSD, Marcel Ciolacu, said that he wanted a political alliance of the social democrats with the PNL and whether it would be possible for the PSD to support him in the presidential elections, Ciucă replied that each party must – mobilize the electorate and have their own options to enter the next elections.
“I'll tell you once again in numbers – if we look at the numbers obtained by each party, their sum is considerably higher than the vote obtained on the joint list. As such, the electorate of each of us pulls and motivates, mobilizes for everything that means the values and identity of each party. As such, at this time, I strongly advocate that each of us mobilize our electorate and have our own options and arguments to enter the presidential and general elections“, the PNL leader said, according to Agerpres.
Regarding the possibility of a tandem Nicolae Ciucă president – Marcel Ciolacu prime minister in the coming years, he mentioned that, after the elections, the citizens' option will be seen and there must be a considerable majority in the Parliament.
“After we have the elections and we see what are the results again and the option of the Romanian citizens to vote, there must be a considerable majority in the Parliament and also a majority to form a coalition in order to be able to govern on the principle of stability in the future. These almost three years have demonstrated that, when a coalition has this majority, as I said, consistent, it can ensure the necessary decisions for the country to go through special situations, through crisis situations and, as we see the perspective, at least on short term, we will still need that political stability to be able to govern“, Ciucă explained.
In his opinion, the PSD – PNL coalition can work, even if he will be an opponent with Marcel Ciolacu in the presidential elections.
“It is a political confrontation, we certainly do not expect it to be some kind of tango, it is a very serious matter in terms of governance, and on the other hand, as we did in the local campaign, we will follow the same line of the projects, the objectives, so that we remain in the decency that we try and talk about and that we must generate towards each of the citizens of Romania“, added Nicolae Ciucă.
Ciolacu: It is not a personal desire
Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu declared that the decision regarding the candidate PSD will go with in the presidential elections will be taken together with the party leaders, including whether he will run personally or not.
“I will announce the variant with which PSD will go after I talk with my colleagues. (…) We all want a lot in life. I take this decision (if he will run or not – no) with my colleagues, because it is not our own wish, we do not say a prayer and make a wish. Things in politics are more complicated“, said the prime minister, after being asked, which variant PSD will go with in the 2024 presidential elections and if he personally wants to run. Ciolacu reiterated that PSD will have a presidential candidate.
Marcel Ciolacu said that he will have meetings with all the leaders of the party, this week, in the meeting of the National Political Council, and a decision will be made regarding the party's candidate for the presidential elections.
