In the fight for the leadership of USR, a party that came out badly damaged after the local elections on Sunday, June 9, 2024, the name of the mayor of Timisoara, Dominic Fritz, was also circulated.

Freshly (re)confirmed as mayor, Fritz declared that the big discussion in the party is whether the candidate for the presidency of the USR must also assume a presidential candidacy.
He said the two positions should not be mixed and told colleagues he would not be available to run for president.
In the last few days, two names have been circulating within the USR to save the honor of the party: Domnic Fritz, president of the USR, and Elena Lasconi, as the USR's presidential candidate.
“It's really a difficult situation in which we find ourselves, as a party, and those who won majorities and showed that they can win, they confirmed, have a special responsibility. We have to reset ourselves in order to gain the trust of more voters. I have a certain sense of duty to the party to get involved as well. In what form, we will have to see these days”, said Dominic Fritz in the show Romania Politică from Prima News and quoted by News.ro.
Fritz stated that he is in discussions with many colleagues.
“I am not afraid of a candidacy for the presidency of the party. There are many colleagues who ask me to run. The big discussion is whether the candidate for the presidency of the party must also assume a candidacy for the presidency. I don't think the two necessarily need to be mixed. I say very clearly and I also tell my colleagues that I will not be available to run for the presidency“, the mayor of Timisoara wanted to specify.
About a tandem of USR president Domnic Fritz and Elena Lasconi as a USR presidential candidate, the mayor said that it is one of the options.
“I think that this is one of the possible options, Elena Lasconi is a very appreciated colleague, not only in the USR but also in the ranks of the electorate”he specified.
Fritz stated that he had this discussion with Elena Lasconi and “this tandem possibility is on the table”. “The registration for candidacies ends on Sunday”, he emphasized.
