AUR would have signed a statement in support of the Ukrainian cause, to enter the Conservative Group in the European Parliament. However, AUR leader George Simion does not agree with Romania’s donation of a PATRIOT missile system to Ukraine.

“We asked the AUR for an official written statement regarding their unilateral support for the Ukrainian cause, without which entry into the CRE group would not have been possible, as we have always been with Kiev.” The statement was made by the co-president of the CRE group and MEP of the Brothers of Italy (FdI), Nicola Procaccini, writes loopcited by G4Media.

“I asked the Romanians from AUR to do it and they agreed. (…) If Orban also wanted to join the conservatives tomorrow, he should do the same”Procaccini explained.

The leadership of European conservatives and reformists approved on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, the integration of AUR MEPs into the group.

The leader of the AUR, George Simion, condemned, on Thursday, the CSAT decision regarding Romania’s donation of a high-range PATRIOT surface-to-air missile system to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“I condemn in the harshest terms today’s decision by President Klaus Iohannis and CSAT, to give up the Patriot-type defense for Romania and to grant this support to Ukraine. As president of Romania, I will not involve our country and I will not expose Romanians to any type of war. Romania has no reason to enter other people’s wars, Romania must invest in its own defense capabilities. That is why I am officially announcing to you, because I am the candidate with a high chance of entering the second round of elections and because I am the only candidate with a chance who expresses a different opinion: The Patriot Defense System must remain to defend the Romanians, and Romania does not must enter into no war,” Simion relayed.
