PSD presidential scenario: Geoana, supported as an independent. What other options do the social democrats go for?

Political sources claim that one of the scenarios that will be discussed at the PSD congress regarding the presidential elections is the support of Mircea Geoană as an independent.

According to Adevărul sources, PSD president Marcel Ciolacu will propose, at the congress that will take place in August, including the support of an independent for the presidential elections, given as an example Mircea Geoană.

The social democrats will decide at the congress who is the candidate supported by the PSD in the presidential elections.

However, several scenarios are valid, including a PSD-PNL tandem: that is, a social-liberal will go for the position of president and a liberal for that of prime minister, or vice versa.

Mircea Geoană, supported by PSD as an independent?

Mircea Geoană was asked, last week, in Cluj-Napoca, if he was contacted by PSD or PNL representatives for discussions regarding the presidential candidacy. He answered: “I don’t have such conversations. You know very well what my position is.”

Asked if an independent can win the elections in Romania, without the help of the parties, Geoană said:

The parties do not elect the president of Romania, but the citizens. Presidential elections are different from other elections. The turnout is much higher, the elections are more personalized, you don’t choose the party, but a person, a man. It’s a completely different choice.”

Geoană claimed that he has conversations with his colleagues, heads of state and government, elected independently: “I asked them how you can win without party structures in the polling stations. They replied, “why do you need people in the polling stations?” Perhaps in our culture you need people at the polls to guard your votes. I said it and I repeat it, Romania has remained for too long with an outdated electoral system, with bags and stamps. We are one of the best performing countries in Europe in terms of technology and we make all these kinds of choices”he also said.

Mircea Geoană also stated that the parties play an important role in the election of the president, but a secondary role.

Asked if he will run for the presidency of Romania and when he will announce his candidacy, Mircea Geoană answered: “At the right moment. Now I have a job to do at NATO”.

However, Mircea Geoană claimed that he will not reject the support of a party, PSD or another party, in case of an independent candidacy.

Is the scenario “Mircea Geoană supported as independent by PSD for the presidency” a valid one? At least Mircea Geoană claimed that he would not refuse support from the PSD. It remains to be seen what the social democrats will decide at the congress in August.
