The Minister of Education, Ligia Deca, spoke to Digi 24 about these new rules in schools.

“What we have introduced is that the school, in its own regulation, can completely prohibit the use of mobile phones during school activities. I left it up to the school because there are schools that are easy to get to, parents can easily get to if there is an emergency, but there are also schools in remote areas where, for example, parents need to get in touch with students to know when they have to- i take over, when there is an emergency and so on. Each school knows the community, knows the needs, knows the possibilities, and then they can decide either to go with the general rule, no phones during class, with a storage area at the entrance to the classroom, or to go with an even stricter rule, as I have seen in other European states: the complete ban of mobile phones in schools, of course, with the exceptions given for their use for educational purposes. If the teacher considers them useful for an interactive lesson, they can be used punctually”, a sent by minister Ligia Deca.

According to the minister, “there are a series of sanctions in the regulation that go from a verbal or written warning to the most serious sanction, which is expulsion. Depending on the gravity of the act, an appropriate sanction is applied”.

“Attention to the educational process decreases with the focus on what they are watching on their phone. We also saw in the PISA results. There was a graph at the PISA presentation made on the last study that shows that any use of the mobile phone for any purpose, may be for educational purposes, more than one hour a day decreases students’ math performance. A special study was made for mathematics to see what are the factors that positively and negatively influence the performance of students in all states where the PISA test was applied. We have scientific confirmation that excessive cell phone use has a negative impact on performance.” the Minister of Education explained to Digi 24.
