Miley Cyrus is being sued for alleged copyright infringement on her song ‘Flowers’, accused of copying Bruno Mars’ hit ‘When I Was Your Man’. Tempo Music Investments claims there are significant similarities between the two tracks and is seeking damages, plus a ban on the hit.
Miley Cyrus Could Be Banned From Singing ‘Flowers’
Miley Cyrus has been sued for alleged copyright infringement related to her hit song “Flowers” from 2023. The artist is accused of imitating “When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars. Released as the lead single from the album “Endless Summer Vacation“, “Flowers” became a global hit, topping the charts and winning two Grammy Awards in 2024, including a nomination for Song of the Year, according to The Independent.
According to TMZ, Tempo Music Investments sued Miley Cyrus, claiming that “Flowers” copied the chord progression and some lyrics from the Bruno Mars song. It is also stated that there are significant similarities in the melody, harmony and chorus.
If Miley Cyrus loses the lawsuit, she could be forced to pay damages and her performance of “Flowers” could be banned.
“When I Was Your Man”, released in 2012, was also a No. 1 in the US and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance.
“It’s undeniable, based on the combination and number of similarities between the two records, that ‘Flowers’ wouldn’t exist without ‘When I Was Your Man’“, the court documents state.
Tempo Music is asking for damages and for Miley Cyrus to be banned from distributing or performing the song ‘Flowers’ live. Bruno Mars is not directly involved in the lawsuit.
