Chemical castration of rapists and pedophiles, on the verge of legalization in Italy

Italy has taken an important step towards legalizing the chemical castration of sex offenders. In this sense, the parliamentarians approved the creation of a committee that could draft a series of laws regarding the treatment of rapists and pedophiles with hormonal blocking drugs.

The establishment of a law on the chemical castration of pedophiles and rapists is part of the government program of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who stated that she will “cut” to the flesh to stop this scourge of sexual assaults, writes Politico.

In this regard, the lower house of the Parliament in Rome adopted a motion by the far-right League, part of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s governing coalition, which stipulates that drug treatment should be consensual, reversible and with the aim of reducing the risk of relapse. Under proposals by the far-right League, convicted sex offenders could be given a suspended sentence in exchange for hormone blocking treatment.

Violent criticism from the Opposition: “A return to medieval times”

League chief Matteo Salvini welcomed the idea, writing on X: “Victory for the League! … We have taken another important step forward in our historic battle for justice and common sense: zero tolerance for rapists and pedophiles.”

Athe position also came up with a point of view saying that the proposals are “extremist” and “violate everything that humanity and justice mean”. Deputy Simona Bonafè from the center-left Democratic Party stated that the League’s proposal is “unconstitutional, undermining the foundation of our legal system that has outgrown the use of corporal punishment for centuries.” The Greens and Left Alliance also criticized “the endless vocation for repression” of the League. Enrico Borghi, from the centrist “Italia Viva” party, wrote on social media: “What’s next? Tar and feathers, or rope and soap?”

Feminist groups have warned that the reasons behind violent sexual crimes such as rape are not unstoppable sexual urges, but cultural factors. Current Italian Justice Minister Carlo Nordio opposed similar proposals in 2019 before entering government, saying they were “a return to medieval times”.

What is chemical castration?

Chemical castration consists of administering drugs that inhibit the release of hormones that stimulate the testicles to produce testosterone, thus decreasing libido. Mandatory chemical castration is allowed in Russia and Poland and some US states for certain crimes, but there are doubts about its effectiveness in preventing recidivism. Moreover, experts say it can have physical and psychological side effects.

Since coming to power in 2022, the right-wing administration of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has proposed very tough measures regarding citizen safety and public order. Thus, the government led by Meloni introduced legislation establishing new crimes but also higher penalties. Meloni managed with an iron hand the critical situation in Caivano, a disadvantaged town on the outskirts of Naples, which had become a real symbol of crime in Italy.
