The tune is believed to have been composed in the mid-to-late 1760s and consists of seven miniature movements for a string trio, lasting about 12 minutes, according to information released Thursday by Leipzig’s municipal libraries.

Born on January 27, 1756, Mozart proved to be a child prodigy who began composing at an extremely young age. He was tutored even by his father, a talented violinist.

The researchers worked at the city’s music library while preparing the latest edition of the Kochel catalogue, a work on the musical universe of the famous composer.

According to the researchers, the piece of music discovered was not written by the composer, but would be a copy made around 1780.

The piece was performed on Thursday by a string trio at the Kochel catalog presentation event, which took place in the Austrian city of Salzburg.

The piece, entitled in the catalog Ganz kleine Nachtmusik, will have its premiere in Germany on Saturday, at the Leipzig Opera.

In Kochel, it is stated that the piece was written “before Mozart’s first trip to Italy”, according to the municipal libraries.
