The night science comes alive. Amazing live demos and experiments in your city

Every year, a special event is organized all over the European continent and beyond. It is the “Night of European Researchers”, which succeeds in turning scientific research into an engaging, accessible and inspirational event for all ages.

this year, “Night of European Researchers” will take place simultaneously across Europe, from 27 to 30 September 2024, in more than 400 cities on the continent and beyond. From Romania, 21 localities will participate in the event.

The theme this time is “Science for Peace and Security”with a special focus on young people and children, with the aim of inspiring them to pursue careers in science and research. But the main purpose of this event is to make science accessible and appealing to all, regardless of age or knowledge level.

Thus, researchers step out of the labs to interact with the public in an informal way. Specialists from various scientific and technological fields, from physics and biology to social sciences and humanities, actively participate, thus facilitating a direct link with the community. This diversity allows the public to understand the impact of research on everyday life.

Through robotics workshops, fun chemistry, interactive experiments, educational games, scientific presentations, exhibitions and demonstrations, participants will have the opportunity to discover the fascinating world of science. The research presented is often related to local issues, traditions and social needs. All activities within “Nights of European Researchers” they are free and open to all, ensuring non-discriminatory access to science.

Researchers from ICSI present live experiments in a mall in Vâlcea

If Bucharest and university cities shine during the event “Night of the Researchers”the province is not inferior.

Râmnicu Vâlcea, for example, is the only city in the country where the event will be organized in a mall, as Gabriela Solomon, representative of the Vâlcea Community Foundation – involved in the event – revealed to us.

On September 27, 2024, therefore, between 16:00 and 20:00, River Plaza Mall will host exciting activities presented by teachers and mentors from the Șiințescu program, together with researchers from the National Research and Development Institute for Cryogenic and Isotopic Technologies ( ICSI), one of the most prestigious institutions in the country.

The public will have the opportunity to see live experiments, discover innovative projects and witness spectacular demonstrations of natural phenomena and cutting-edge technologies, ICSI Râmnicu Vâlcea being recognized, both nationally and internationally, for advanced research in the field of isotopes and energy nuclear, with an essential role in the production of heavy water (D2O) and in the separation of hydrogen (deuterium) isotopes.

An important pillar in Romania’s Nuclear Program, ICSI supports the optimal operation of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant, but also focuses on the development of clean energy technologies, such as the use of hydrogen as a future energy source, through advanced electrolysis processes and research in production of alternative fuels and energy storage materials.

Complex topics, approached with accessibility

events “Night of European Researchers” offers a unique opportunity to explore complex scientific topics such as cyber security, environmental protection, elementary particle physics and space science in a friendly and accessible way for all. Participants have the chance to understand how these fields influence everyday life and to discover the innovative solutions proposed by researchers to the global challenges we face.

Since 2005, “Night of European Researchers” aims to bring science closer to society and stimulate young people’s interest in research. At the end of every September, researchers from 23 countries celebrate the contributions of science to building a better and more sustainable society.

“Night of European Researchers” is an event organized in Romania by the ReCoNnect consortium. This is part of the series of Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions, included in the Horizon Europe framework program of the European Union. ReCoNnect also runs other initiatives to promote science education, such as the ReCoNnect Science Caravan, the “Otherwise School” ReCoNnect, the ReCoNnect National Science Competition and the Summer School of Science and Technology from Măgurele.
