According to Romanian law, drivers must pay a road tax when driving on a national, European, express or motorway road. Its value differs depending on the type of vehicle and its destination. The tax does not apply to those using local or county roads.

The law provides that the owner of a car that drives without a valid license plate risks being fined. The fine is between 250 and 500 lei, but it can also reach 4,500 lei, for heavy tonnage trucks.

Starting this year, a new law came into force, which allows the payment of the damage after the trip has been completed. Law 275/2024 allows drivers who travel by car to pay the road tax until midnight the next day.

The new measure will be applied from 2026, according to the Promoter.

At the beginning of November, the law was promulgated according to which drivers have the possibility to pay the speed limit even within 24 hours from the start date of its validity.

Currently, drivers are still required to collect their fuel before setting off on the road. CNAIR announced that it allows those who have not paid the toll to pay it until midnight.

The new normative act will be valid only in the case of vehicles up to 3.5 tons. Also, the road tax will be calculated according to the category of the car, its pollution class and the duration of use of public roads.

A new concept for heavy vehicles, TollRo, will also be introduced. Thus, heavy vehicles will pay a toll by multiplying the number of kilometers traveled by the TollRo unit value.
