Huawei launched the Mate 70 series of smartphones on Tuesday, capable of running on its latest domestically developed operating system, as the Chinese giant continues its efforts to achieve technological independence following sanctions imposed by the United States, reports CNBC, according to news.ro.

Richard Yu, director of Huawei’s consumer and automotive divisions, said that the Mate 70 can run HarmonyOS NEXT, the first mobile operating system fully developed by the company. Huawei hopes that this OS will become a viable alternative to Apple’s Android and iOS in China.

The first versions of HarmonyOS were built using open-source Android code, but it appears that HarmonyOS NEXT no longer uses this code, marking a significant update in Huawei’s software development.
