The PSD, PNL and UDMR leaders discussed the formation of the government without the USR, immediately after Elena Lasconi gave an ultimatum at the Wednesday evening talks.
“Ain’t nobody got time for ’em”said sources participating in the discussions for Antena 3.
At the Victoria Palace, the political leaders discussed the issue of the budget, the quick inauguration of the new government and how the ministries will be divided.
Thus, it was decided that the position of prime minister should return to the PSD, most likely Marcel Ciolacu, although other political sources claim that he would be interested in taking over the leadership of the Chamber of Deputies.
At the same time, the PSD wants 9 ministries, but the UDMR would in turn want an additional ministry through the exit of the USR from the discussions. The leaders of the PSD, PNL, UDMR and those of the minorities determined that the future Government would have 16 ministries, compared to the current 18. The Ministry of the Family and the Ministry of Energy will disappear, which will move to Labor and the Economy, respectively.
Klaus Iohannis conveyed that “he better move fast” to the negotiations in order to convene the consultations. He stated that he will call the leaders for talks only when the coalition has a prime minister’s name.
“There are ongoing negotiations between the parties, it seems that they are working to form a pro-European coalition, but as the consultations are a rather formal phase, I don’t want to invite the parties just to meet. I want to invite the parties when there is clarity in the ongoing negotiations, at least with regard to a person who is proposed to me for the position of prime minister. It would be nice to move quickly, but that depends on how the parties negotiate“, declared Iohannis.
What could be the timetable for the investiture of the Government
Romania could have a new government early next week, by Christmas.
According to the calendar discussed in the coalition, the senators would be sworn in on Friday, after President Klaus Iohannis convened Parliament starting at 2:00 p.m. Deputies will also finish on Saturday, and on Sunday or Monday President Klaus Iohannis will call the parties to consultations for the nomination of a prime minister. Ministerial hearings and the investiture vote could take place on Tuesday at the latest, on an accelerated timetable.
To be sworn in the government, the coalition needs 234 votes. PSD – PNL – UDMR and Minorities have 246 votes, without USR, i.e. 12 votes more than needed.
On Wednesday evening, the USR leader, Elena Lasconi, declared that she would have wanted to govern but “they don’t want us”.
“Of course we would like to be in the government, to put our shoulder because we know that we have very good colleagues, very skilled, in a difficult moment for Romania, but they do not want us and we have noticed this since the beginning of the negotiations”she declared at B1.
