“They will go to places that are exclusive to the very wealthy,” Winston Chesterfield, founder of Barton, a luxury and wealth consulting firm, told Business Insider. He added that they prefer remote places where they can stay alone.
Jeff Bezos (the founder of the Amazon store) and Barry Diller (the founder of the Fox Broadcasting Company) prefer to take out their yachts and roam the Caribbean Sea, according to the marine traffic tracking app.
Eric Schmidt (former executive chairman of Google), has other preferences, heading to Barbados.
Another favorite destination for the world’s billionaires is the island of Saint-Barthélemy in the Caribbean Sea, known for its exclusive hotels and restaurants, but also for its natural beauty. The Rockefeller and Rothschild families have owned properties there since the beginning of the last century.
Last year, Bezos, his fiancee and the famous basketball player, Michael Jordan, were seen on the island of Saint-Barhelemy. For those who don’t go yachting, the Eden Rock or Cheval Blanc hotels on the island are another way for the world’s billionaires to relax. A night at these hotels can cost over $5,000.
Other billionaires prefer cool destinations
Other billionaires prefer cooler destinations in the mountains.
“Mountain holidays are a better escape than any other holiday, even escapes to their own private remote islandsChesterfield said.
In the Alps, in the towns of Gstaad, St. Moritz or Courchevel, Russian oligarchs spent their holidays. Chesterfield says it has discovered even quieter billionaire destinations, such as Crans-Montana in Switzerland, where billionaires like Greek Vicky Safra even have a retirement home.
Some of the wealthiest own cabins that they rent out for up to $40,000 a week in high season.
Property prices continue to rise in these locations, with houses in Gstaad, the most expensive locality, costing €41,500 per square meter, according to property consultancy Knight Frank’s Alpine Index 2024.
Aspen, however, remains the most exclusive skiing destination.
The city has the most residents with net worths of more than $30 million, according to a 2023 study by Altrata. Billionaires like Steve Wynn, Daniel Och or Terry Tailor, who even own houses in the city, prefer to come here.
More recently, celebrities such as Rihanna or Kylie Jenner have been seen in the center of Aspen.
There is a restaurant by chef Nobu Matsuhisa, luxury stores such as Prada and Gucci, and private clubs that make the very rich feel at home.
