Massive layoffs are coming at the Chamber of Deputies as well. More than 200 employees will be laid off

The dismissals already announced for the Senate, which have sparked widespread protests, will also continue in the Chamber of Deputies: more than 200 people will be fired. The figures were confirmed by the head of the Chamber of Deputies, who explained to Adevărul that the selection will be made through competition.

About 200 people from the Chamber of Deputies will be fired

UPDATE: Over 200 dismissals at the Chamber of Deputies

The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Ciprian-Constantin Şerban, explained to “Adevarul” that the number of employees will be reduced by over 200 people. The employees would take an exam, after which it would be decided who leaves.

“There will be more than 200 people (no – eliminated through the competition) out of a total of approximately 1600 people, the Chamber has in total. From there we have 428 people who also serve other institutions. Security, Technical, Administrative, Official Gazette. We still have 125 people who are self-financing, here I mean the people who deal with the rental. It would remain somewhere around 1100. Of the 1100, we take into account over 200 positions. (…) Internal exams and competitions. We also have people who are for a fixed period, and for an indefinite period. For those who are determined it is much simpler, for those who are competitive, within the office, we will do exams and internal competitions and, depending on the grade (…) We will walk everywhere (…) This will be the procedure, if in an office we have ten people and we decide to stay 8, there will be a competition or an internal exam and then, depending on the grade, the first 8 qualify, the last two are the ones who will leave. (…) I will make a proposal that will be voted on in the Permanent Bureau of the Chamber, a Memorandum”, explained the head of the Chamber.

The proposal would be submitted on Monday.

The number of employees at the Chamber of Deputies would be reduced by around 200, but the layoffs will not concern self-financing services, sources close to the discussions told G4Media.

According to the quoted sources, at the beginning of next week a plan for efficiency and reduction of expenses will be presented.

Currently, the Chamber of Deputies employs around 1,400 people.

These employees, namely the administrative staff of the Parliament, who also deal with the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, will not be affected by layoffs.

In addition, the redundancies will not concern the nearly 100 employees who are in charge of renting out the Parliament’s halls for various events, given that this service is self-financing and profitable.

This leaves 1,000 employees who will be subject to layoffs, among whom there will be job cuts of around 20%. The reductions will target the employees of the parliamentary committees, drivers, contractual staff, explained the quoted sources.

The President of the Senate, Ilie Bolojan, presented on Tuesday, in a press conference, a plan to reorganize the institution, which will involve a significant reduction in staff and substantial savings to the Senate’s budget.

The two memoranda, aimed at reducing staff by 24%, eliminating 156 positions, and reducing vehicle maintenance expenses, were approved by the Senate leadership on Tuesday.

Thus, the number of positions will decrease from 796 to 610, and 156 employees will be laid off. Also, expenses related to car maintenance will be considerably reduced, announced the vice president of the Senate, Robert Cazanciuc.

There are certainly measures that are welcome. The current functioning scheme of the Senate is from 2013. The pandemic has shown us that the Senate can function with a much smaller number of people and during that period many of the activities went online. Since then, the Senate has been constantly holding meetings online“, Cazanciuc explained, stressing that reducing staff is a necessary step to make the institution more flexible and efficient. In addition, digitization has made it possible to streamline many processes, which justifies this approach.

He added that the reorganization also aims to improve the functioning of the Senate, starting from the need for the institution to respond correctly and quickly to the needs of citizens. “Much of this project is related to the remaining of a fixed structure at the level of the Senate to keep the memory of the institution, but on the other hand, at least at the level of the management of the permanent office, a large part of the employees must come andhe leaves with the dignitariesto reflect at a given moment the political will”said Cazanciuc.
