Romania currently has about 4.9 million pensioners, and the average pension at national level amounts to 2,813 lei, according to the latest statistics provided by the National Institute of Statistics (INS). Beyond this general figure, there are major differences between counties, which can reach even 40%.
Capital, at the head of the ranking with large pensions
The capital occupies the first place in the top of the pensions in Romania. Here, the average pension is 3,549 lei, with over 700 lei more than the average in the country, according to Euronews.
The following positions are occupied by Brasov and Hunedoara counties, where the pensioners receive, on average, about 3,505 lei a month.
In the case of Hunedoara, large pensions are largely explained by the specificity of the mining industry, a traditional, heavy and dangerous activity, rewarded by more consistent pensions.
Counties with the smallest pensions
At the other end of the ranking are Giurgiu, Vrancea and Botosani, with significantly lower values:
* Botosani: 2,228 lei
* Vrancea: 2,265 lei
* Giurgiu: 2,280 lei.
Thus, the difference between the pensioners in the Capital and those in Botosani reaches almost 1,300 lei a month, which means a discrepancy of about 40% between the most advantageous and the most disadvantaged elderly.
Exceptional cases: Special pensions
In addition to these average data, there are exceptional situations. In Romania, the largest pensions paid by the state reach even 90,000 lei per month, the equivalent of almost 18,000 euros, which generally come from special pensions or income cumulations with privileged status.
