The former American, who was once ranked 26th in the world and played one of her most memorable matches against Simona Halep at the Australian Open, decided she could no longer go on.
After a major injury in 2023, Davis attempted to re-enter the circuit using the protected classification. Even though she returned to the field and pushed as hard as she could, her body didn’t respond the way it had in the past.
She confessed that the moment of withdrawal came naturally: “I dedicated the last 20 years to tennis, and after the US Open I understood that it was time to say goodbye!”.
Throughout her career, Lauren Davis has won two WTA titles and collected a total of $5,241,772 in prize money.
Lauren Davis, indelible memory for Australian Open fans
The American’s withdrawal brings back to the fore the marathon match from 2018 with Simona Halep, the almost four-hour match ended 4-6, 6-4, 15-13.
The 48 games set a historic record at the Australian Open, impossible to match in the new format, and Davis remained in the memory of fans for his spectacular play and incredible endurance.
“How do you sum up years of memories in one post?”
“How to sum up years of memories in one post? I’ve dedicated the last 20 years of my life to tennis, and after the US Open I knew it was time to say goodbye. When I was 16, I left home and all I knew was to follow the dream in my heart.
I moved to Florida and in less than a year I became a professional player. I was never the best or the most talented, but I knew what I wanted and I was determined to achieve it.
“Tennis helped me become the woman I am today!”
At 1.65m, I was one of the shortest players on the circuit, but I never let that limit me. I saw this as an opportunity to be an anomaly, and hopefully inspire others along the way. I hope I did just that.
Tennis has given me so much and I am forever grateful for the memories, lessons and friendships I have made. The lifestyle hasn’t always been easy, but it has brought me and my family so much joy and fulfillment.
Tennis helped me become the woman I am today. He challenged me, pushed me, and helped me grow in ways I never could have imagined. It prepared me to step into a beautiful life after my career!”is part of the message sent by Lauren Davis, on social networks.
