The man was in a car, where the authorities also discovered the weapon with which he was allegedly shot, according to Portuguese media. A passerby alerted the emergency services after spotting the suspicious car.
The family reported him missing on the morning of the tragedy
The family had declared him missing since the morning, after Caetano could no longer be contacted after taking his child to school. The investigation into the circumstances of his death has been taken over by the Judicial Police, which is trying to determine whether it is a crime or something else.
According to the Record, another important member of the same ultras faction could not be found, but there is no further information on the case yet.
Club Benfica issued a public message in memory of Caetano, emphasizing his involvement and attachment to the team, although the formation does not officially recognize the ultras group.
“His unwavering devotion to the club will leave an indelible mark on the history of Benfica support!”reported the club, which still does not officially recognize the group of supporters.
The incident took place on the same day that Benfica played in the Portuguese Cup against Atletico CP, a team from the third division. José Mourinho’s side prevailed 2–0, with goals scored by Ríos and Pavlidis in the second half of the match.
