Alexandru Lăzărescu, the former Head of Mission of Romania at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games, has died: “A true sportsman, rigorous and deeply respected”

Alexandru Lăzărescu, former Head of Mission of Romania at the Summer Olympic Games in Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004, as well as at the Winter Olympic Games in Nagano 1998, died at the age of 90.

The announcement was made by the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee on Tuesday, December 16, on the organization’s Facebook page:

“Romanian sport is poorer. Alexandru Lăzărescu, one of the discreet but essential figures of Romanian Olympic performance, died at the age of 90“.

Throughout his career, Alexandru Lăzărescu’s name was linked to great personalities of world and Romanian sports. He was General Secretary of the Romanian Tennis Federation during the glory period of Ilie Năstase and Ion Țiriac, at the famous Davis Cup finals contested by the Romanians. Later, he worked in the National Council for Physical Education and Sport (CNEFS), an institution that later became the Ministry of Sports, and then continued his activity within the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee, where he contributed decisively to the organization and coordination of Romania’s Olympic delegations, recalls COSR.

“Those who knew him will remember him as a true sportsman, rigorous, loyal to Olympic values ​​and deeply respected by athletes, coaches and colleagues (…). The Romanian sports community sends its sincere condolences to the family and everyone close to them. May God rest him in peace!” it is also shown in the message.

The lifeless body of Alexandru Lăzărescu was deposited on Tuesday, at 4:00 p.m., at the Deleni Church, in Titan Park.

The funeral will take place on Wednesday, at 14:00, at the Sfânta Veneri Cemetery in Bucharest.
