A Romanian compared fuel prices in Romania with those in Great Britain, on social networks, showing that petrol and diesel are cheaper in England than here, despite the huge differences in salaries. However, the comparison is made for a UK petrol station renowned for its competitive prices and regular offers.
According to his post published on Facebook, on January 23, 2026, a liter of gasoline cost 6.51 lei in Liverpool, while in Constanta the price reached 7.70 lei.
And in the case of diesel, the difference is significant: 7.15 lei per liter in Great Britain, compared to 7.91 lei in Romania. So petrol would be around 18% cheaper in the UK.
The author of the post stated that the prices were compared between the cheapest gas station in Constanta (Petrom) and the cheapest one in Liverpool (GO).
Instead, according to cargopedia.ro, in Romania the price of Euro 95 gasoline is 7.67 lei, and that of diesel 7.92 lei. In the United Kingdom general rates are 7.74 lei for petrol and 8.27 lei for diesel, showing similar prices between countries.
The post also shows reporting on the minimum wage. In Great Britain, the minimum net monthly wage is approximately £1,817, equivalent to 10,861 lei, so an hourly payment of £12.21. In Romania, the minimum net salary is around 438 lira, i.e. 2,575 lei, with an hourly rate of 2.53 lira, calculated for a working month of 40 hours per week.
“Gasoline in England is 18% cheaper than in Romania! How the hell did this happen?”, it is shown in the post that generated numerous comments related to the standard of living and fiscal policies in the two countries.
