In the last month of last year, political parties received almost 20 million lei in subsidies from the state budget, the largest amounts being allocated to the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and AUR, while Forța Dreptei received the least, and both it and USR exceeded the allocated budget.
According to AEP reports for all 12 months of last year, PSD received the largest amount, 76,992,250 lei, the party having the largest subsidies from the state. In the last month of the year, PSD received a subsidy of 6,631,849 lei, most of which went to promotion expenses. More precisely, the party allocated 2,556,455 lei for press and propaganda, out of a total of 4,917,691 lei spent in the last month of the year.
And the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) gave the most money to the press and propaganda: 803,818 lei. The second largest amount, 669,285 lei, was spent on expenses related to the organization of political activities. AUR spent a total of 2,290,798 lei in the last month of 2025, having a subsidy of 3,921,517 lei, higher than that of PNL or USR. And the parties Forța Dreptei (FD) and Popular Movement (PMP), formations that did not enter Parliament, exceeded the budget. They receive money from the state, having local elected officials or in the European Parliament, but it seems that the amounts are too small for the formations’ expenses.
PMP spent a total of 105,344 lei in December, although it received 93,827 lei. 41,729 lei were spent on expenses with contributions owed to international political organizations, this being the largest amount, followed by expenses with rents and utilities of the headquarters, of 30,691 lei. What did the sovereignist parties in Parliament spend the money on

The year 2026 does not make the situation easier for the political formations that have so far exceeded their budget. And that’s because subsidies to political parties have been reduced. According to the data of the Permanent Electoral Authority, the formations received up to 2 million lei less per month compared to the end of 2025, after the total last year exceeded 232 million lei.
