The busiest holiday destination in the world is in Thailand and is increasingly sought after by Romanians. The resort of Phuket records an impressive 118 tourists for every local, which places it at the top of the global ranking of the most overcrowded tourist locations.
According to a study conducted by MoneyTransfers.com and cited by the Express publication, the resort of Phuket in Thailand has an impressive ratio of 118 tourists per inhabitant. Which places it first in the global ranking of the most congested tourist destinations.
Famous beaches like Kata and Karon attract millions of visitors every year. But this popularity comes at a cost: locals and tourists alike face extreme congestion, especially during peak season.
The area is invaded by tourists from all over the world and the infrastructure is put under constant pressure. Traffic, public transport, restaurants and public spaces become overcrowded, affecting the quality of life and holiday experience.
Thailand definitely dominates the top. In second and third place are two other very popular destinations in the same country: Pattaya and Krabi. Both are recognized for their spectacular beaches, intense nightlife and the huge number of visitors who choose them year after year.
In Europe, the situation is different. Although there are extremely popular cities, the ratio of tourists to the local population is much lower. For example, Heraklion in Greece has about 22 tourists for every local, Venice 21, and Rhodes just over 20.
However, Venice authorities are considering introducing a tourist tax to control the massive flow of visitors.
Outside of Europe, Muğla (Turkey), Hurghada (Egypt), Macau (China) and Miami (USA) are also on the top, the latter having a ratio of approximately 18 tourists to one local.
