The President of the Senate, Mircea Abrudean, spoke on Sunday evening about President Nicușor Dan’s decision to participate in the first meeting of the Peace Council, stating that “it was a fair one”.
“I believe that this decision was a correct one, we discussed how beneficial the relationship between Romania and the USA is, a strategic relationship (…) Any partnership relationship must be maintained. We had that statement from Vice President Vance in Munich, we had diplomatic efforts to explain the decision (n. ed. regarding the cancellation of the elections)”said Mircea Abrudean on Antena 3.
Regarding the tense period that the Europe-US relationship is going through, the President of the Senate stated: “Certainly the world is changing, we see this every day, everyone who is part of the decision affirms it, including Trump. Romania should definitely position itself more firmly, we should not choose between Europe and the USA. We are part of the EU, but we refer to the USA as security. We must be more assertive, I think. Such a gesture that the president made, by participating in the Council, represents a more assertive positioning.”
The statements come in the context in which Romania participated as an observer at the Peace Council meeting, along with Italy, Greece, the Czech Republic, Cyprus and Mexico. Among the European Union states, only Hungary and Bulgaria accepted the invitation to become full members of the forum.
During his visit to Washington, President Nicușor Dan declared, in an interview given to the publication CaleaEuropeană.ro, that the Romanian-American strategic relationship is “more than thawed”, and his participation in the meeting had both a practical and a symbolic stake.
“From a technical point of view, the relationship is more than “thawed”. That is, there are discussions at the level of experts at all levels: ministers, the embassy, advisers come here frequently, we are making progress on some economic projects”said Nicușor Dan.
Referring to the episode of the cancellation of the 2024 elections and the moment of mistrust that arose in the bilateral relationship, the president said that the situation had already been clarified before the visit.
“He had already been overtaken. It was also unlucky that it overlapped with the change of American power and then all contacts at technical levels (…) did not have a direct interlocutor in the administration until all these changes occurred”added Nicușor Dan.
