PSD president, Sorin Grindeanu, announced that the party will do an analysis “serious and responsible” of participation in governance, emphasizing that social democrats do not remain in power “from inertia” and they don’t have “an obligation towards a temporary prime minister, who victimizes himself and demands blind trust”.
The statements were made on Saturday, at the National Forum of PES activists Romania, in the context of the reactions that appeared after the PSD leader spoke about a possible reevaluation of the party’s participation in the current coalition.
Grindeanu rejected the idea that the analysis would represent a gesture of revolt and claimed that it is a natural approach. “It’s a gesture of responsibility towards the act of governing. It’s exactly what all mature European social democratic parties in Europe are doing,” he stated.
The social-democratic leader specified that, after more than six months since PSD entered the government – a period approaching nine months – it is “mandatory” to evaluate the balance sheet. “No serious party stays in government out of inertia. It stays in government only if the government produces results for the citizens”, Grindeanu said.
He emphasized that PSD’s responsibility is to the Romanians, not to a person temporarily at the head of the Executive.
“We have no obligation to a temporary prime minister. We operate on responsibility. And our responsibility is to the Romanians”declared the president of the PSD, adding that the social democrats must say “transparent and honest” if the current government makes life better for the citizens or if it only asks them to make sacrifices without concrete results.
Grindeanu explained that the internal analysis will start with the work of the PSD ministers, but it will not be limited to them.
“A serious party does not look for external culprits before assessing its own responsibilities. But this analysis will look at the entire government, because we are part of a coalition, and the coalition assumes joint responsibility.” he also said.
On Wednesday evening, the PSD leader had announced that he would extend the internal consultation on remaining in government, launched since December. Among the topics under discussion is the preservation of the USR in the coalition, but also the person of the prime minister.
“The protocol can remain the same, but with another premier given by the PNL”Grindeanu declared, claiming that the current coalition “it squeaks badly”.
