What Traian Băsescu says about France’s offer to enter under its nuclear umbrella: “A very delicate issue”

Traian Băsescu commented on French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal to extend France’s nuclear umbrella over European states. In an intervention on the B1 TV station, the former president assessed both the opportunities and the risks that the accession to such a security arrangement would entail for Romania.

Traian Băsescu pointed out that the discussion is complicated by the unpredictable behavior of American President Donald Trump, who he said can change direction from one day to the next. In this context, the former president raised the question of whether Washington would still automatically respect NATO commitments, especially Article 5.

“It was very clear that the offer is to all EU countries, so Romania was in the package even if nothing had been announced. It is a very delicate issue. We must bear in mind that, on the one hand, the US president in office is a person who today can make a decision, and tomorrow another. Who asks Europe to defend itself and only when it considers, Europe must support him. I raise the issue in these terms because this is Trump. You never know if he will honor his commitments or not; if he will honor article 5 (of the NATO treaty – n. ed.) or not”Băsescu explained.

The risk of alienation from the United States

In Băsescu’s opinion, accepting the French nuclear umbrella could lead to a gradual separation of Europe from the United States in terms of security. The former president noted that although NATO already provides nuclear protection, uncertainty about the Trump administration’s position complicates the decision of European states.

The limits of French nuclear capability

The former president of Romania also pointed out the practical limits of Macron’s proposal. France should significantly expand its nuclear arsenal to be able to guarantee the security of all of Europe. In addition, the French warheads are not integrated into the NATO command system, meaning that the final decision on their use would rest solely in the hands of the French president.

A difficult decision for Romania

Traian Băsescu appreciated that Romania is facing a complicated choice, influenced both by the uncertainties in the American policy and by the limits of the French offer.

The former president recalled that Donald Trump’s term ends in 2028, and the next leader in the White House could bring predictability back to transatlantic security relations.

We remind you that Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu confirmed the existence of the proposal from the French government, in the statements provided to the Reuters news agency. Oana Țoiu specified that Romania’s participation in such a collective protection system represents a topic of major importance for national security, which is why the subject will be analyzed with maximum attention by the authorities. The minister emphasized that, considering the strategic implications, a decision in this regard will be taken in the CSAT.

The context of this invitation is closely related to the paradigm shift recently announced by the Élysée Palace. President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that France is to add to its nuclear arsenal and strengthen its deterrent capability. This measure is justified by the French leader by the worrying evolution of the international security environment. Macron warned of “the growing risk of global conflicts that cross the nuclear threshold”underlining the need for Europe to have solid protection tools in the face of potential aggression.
