George Simion, the president of the AUR, explained on Wednesday evening the reasons why the parliamentarians of the formation did not support the PSD amendment on supplementing funds for vulnerable people, stating that his party will support the adoption of a budget within the 6% deficit target, but will not participate in what he considers to be a populist approach of the coalition.
“Don’t ask us to be complicit with the PSD in turning Romanians into beggars”, says Simion, charging that “what the PSD and the PNL are doing now, just for show, costs the Romanians who are in vulnerable situations a lot“.
George Simion argues that the AUR presented an alternative budget that would comply with the legislation and provide funds for retirees, the disabled and student bursaries, while keeping the deficit within internationally accepted limits.
“Unlike the irresponsible parties, which led Romania to an inflation of over 9%, to a budget deficit of 9% and did not come up with the country’s budget when it was supposed to, in 2025, AUR chooses to be responsible. We are putting on the table of the Minister of Finance, of all the parties and in the attention of the public opinion an alternative budget option”, said the AUR leader.
The AUR leader sent a direct message to pensioners, reiterating that the party will support the amendments aimed at complying with the laws in force, including the indexation of pensions with the inflation rate.
“What the current coalition wants is to turn people with disabilities, pupils and students, pensioners into beggars. We reject this idea, that Romanians are beggars and must stand with their hand outstretched for help given out of mercy. It is the money they worked for, for which they contributed and they must receive it“, Simion added.
“They will get at least one support from the state and that will be with the AUR vote in the plenary””
The president of the AUR emphasized that the formation submitted more than 1,300 amendments, which must be debated in the committees, and promised support for the vulnerable categories in the final vote in the plenary.
“We assure disabled people, mothers, pensioners of all categories that they will get at least some support from the state and that will be with the AUR vote in plenary”he also said.
“It’s irresponsibility on the part of this coalition from the zero moment”
Simion reiterated that the AUR will support the adoption of a budget within the deficit target: “We want to do justice. That’s why the Romanians sent us here, not to be complicit with the PSD or the USR.”
He also criticized the delay with which the coalition presented the budget project: “It is irresponsibility on the part of this coalition from the zero moment. They had to put the country’s budget on the Parliament’s table in December at the latest.”
The adoption of the state budget for 2026 was blocked on Wednesday evening, after the suspension of the meeting of the budget-finance committees, following the request of the UDMR to resume negotiations between the party leaders. Without the committee’s report, the project cannot reach the assembled plenary.
