The Romanian Television management approved, during a meeting of the Board of Directors, the abolition of the TVR Folklor channel as a classic television station and its continuation exclusively in the digital environment. The decision was adopted with 7 votes for and 6 against.
In the same meeting, the TVR management also decided to remove TVR 3 from the audience measurements, as well as the reorganization of the News and Sport Directorate, which will be transformed into a new structure called the INFO Directorate, according to the information published by Pagina de Media.
TVR Folklor, launched on November 27, 2023 under the mandate of Dan Cristian Turturică, broadcasts mainly archive productions, including shows such as “Tezaur Folkloric”, “Zestrea romanilor” and “Muzica Regiunilor”.
The decision was criticized by the unions, MediaSind representatives from the Board of Directors, Cristi Godinac and Sorin Torică, considering the vote controversial and raising questions about the appropriateness of the measure.
TVR: reducing costs and adapting to the digital environment
TVR representatives explained that the measure is part of a process of cost optimization and adaptation to changes in media consumption.
According to the institution, the transformation of TVR Folklor into an exclusively online channel will allow the reduction of technical expenses and alignment with current market trends.
In this regard, public television is to submit to CNA the necessary documentation for updating the TVR Folklor license and withdrawing the audiovisual license for cable broadcasting. The content will continue to be available on the tvrplus.ro platform and on other authorized streaming services.
TVR officials claim that the editorial team will continue its activity, producing and broadcasting in the digital environment programs dedicated to Romanian folklore, traditions and cultural heritage.
“Through the reconfiguration of TVR Folklor, the management of Public Television aims to reduce technical costs, but also to adapt to new media consumption habits and the accelerated dynamics of the digital market”, the representatives of the institution sent.
