Sorana Cîrstea managed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the WTA Rouen tournament! The Romanian, the second favorite of the competition from France, enjoyed the abandonment of the Chinese Xinyu Wang, from the eighth round, at the score of 5-3.
In the next phase of the tournament, Sorana will face Anna Bondar, after the Hungarian managed to prevail against Oleksandra Olinikova on Thursday evening, final score 6-0, 4-6, 6-0. The match Cîrstea vs. Bondar will take place today, after 20.30.
Cîrstea, for the first time in Rouen
Sorana Cîrstea prevailed every time in the matches directly against the player from Hungary. The Romanian defeated Bondar in 2019, in the first round in Budapest (4-6, 6-3, 6-4), but also in the quarterfinals in Lyon, in 2022 (6-3, 6-3).
For the presence in the quarter-finals in Rouen, both Cîrstea and Bondar obtained checks worth 7,025 euros, together with 54 points each in the WTA ranking.
Hot match in the first round for the Romanian
On her debut in Rouen, Sorana Cîrstea defeated France’s Fiona Ferro after a very close match, ended 6-3, 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/2), which lasted 2 hours and 29 minutes.
The Romanian won the first set without much emotion, 6-3. In the second set, she led 4-1, but her opponent came back and won in a tie-break. In the decider, Cîrstea had 5-2 and even two match balls, but Ferro equalized. In the end, Sorana prevailed in the decisive tie-break with 7-2 and got the victory.
