The president of the European People’s Party group, Manfred Weber, on Wednesday raised an alarm signal in the plenary session of the European Parliament regarding the situation in Romania, referring to the PSD-AUR joint censure motion, and directly asking the leader of the S&D group, Iratxe Perez Garcia, how it got here.
“Last year the Romanian people voted to elect their president and I was happy that in the end the AUR candidate did not become the president of Romania, that the pro-European forces fought and won. And it was an important fight in Romania. The EPP and the socialists had the mandate to reform Romania together, to take the necessary steps together, with the milestones presented by the Commission”said Manfred Weber at the debate on the situation in the Middle East and its impact on energy prices in Europe, writes Agerpres.
“Yesterday (Tuesday – no) the socialists and the AUR party together presented a no-confidence motion against a stable pro-European government. Iratxe (Garcia Perez), I wonder why, what is the background of this? What is the reasoning to question this government, together with the AUR?”, Weber asked the socialist leader directly.
“I just want to say that if the EPP did the same against a socialist prime minister, to question a socialist prime minister together with a right-wing populist party, we would have thousands of initiatives in the EP. But it’s not my style of doing things. I’m just asking the question and probably the socialists will clarify if they want to continue cooperation with AUR in the future”said Weber, who has addressed the political crisis in Romania several times in recent days.
The leader of the S&D group answered Weber, but did not mention Romania’s name.
“Mr. Weber, if you give lessons, be sure that they are the right ones. I mean that the Popular Party of Spain is concluding agreements with the far-right party, starting from a single principle, that of national priority. If you give lessons, be sure that you give the right ones”Iratxe Perez Garcia also said.
The leader of the socialist group in the European Parliament, Iratxe García Pérez, defended, on Tuesday, PSD’s decision to leave the government, explaining that it came after the proposals of the social democrats were not accepted and following an almost unanimous internal vote.
