The president of the PSD, Sorin Grindeanu, declared that he is willing to resign as the head of the party if the motion of censure against the Government led by Ilie Bolojan does not pass the Parliament. Also, according to him, the social democrats want to maintain a coalition formula close to the current one, but without the support of minority governments.
Asked directly if he would assume this political responsibility in the event of a failure, the social democratic leader initially avoided a categorical answer.
“We will do an internal analysis, everything is on the table”, said Grindeanu, Thursday evening, on Antena 3 CNN.
Later, he became much more blunt, letting it be understood that he does not rule out such a decision at all.
“I will resign if this is how things unfold,” said the PSD leader.
Direct message to Ilie Bolojan
However, Grindeanu linked the possibility of his own resignation to the departure of the current prime minister from the head of the Executive.
“Is Ilie Bolojan calling me not to resign? Immediately after Ilie Bolojan resigns from the position of prime minister”, he said.
PSD says it has a plan for governing after the motion
Asked what the social-democrats’ scenario is for the period after the possible fall of the Government, Grindeanu claimed that the PSD will go to the consultations at the Cotroceni Palace with a clear position.
According to him, the social democrats want to maintain a coalition formula close to the current one, but without the support of minority governments.
“We are open to options that would ensure a majority government”, said the PSD leader.
He emphasized that the party he leads does not consider building parliamentary majorities outside the current coalition.
Grindeanu specified that the PSD will most likely be the first party invited to the presidential consultations, considering the parliamentary weight.
Assurances regarding economic stability
In the context of concerns related to possible economic turbulence and the volatility of the exchange rate after the vote on the motion, the PSD leader said that there are solutions to maintain stability.
Romania is going through a new period of political turmoil that could have far-reaching consequences. Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan declared on Thursday, April 30, that he is prepared for any political scenario, including the situation in which a possible censure motion would pass.
