Romania’s success at the 43rd Balkan Mathematics Olympiad: Students won one gold, one silver and four bronze medals

Romanian students won a gold medal, a silver medal and four bronze medals at the 43rd Balkan Mathematics Olympiad held in Thessaloniki, announced Thursday, May 7, officials from the Ministry of Education.

“A gold medal, a silver medal and four bronze medals for Romanian students at the 43rd Balkan Mathematical Olympiad (BMO 2026), held from May 3-8, 2026, in Thessaloniki, Greece. Congratulations to the six students from our team”the representatives of the Ministry of Education wrote on the institution’s Facebook page.

According to them, a gold medal was obtained by Andrei Vila from the Bucharest International Informatics High School, and a silver medal was obtained by David-Vlad Marghidan from the Bucharest International Informatics High School.

The four Romanian students who obtained bronze medals are: Mircea Maxim Rebengiuc, National College of Informatics “Tudor Vianu”; Ștefan-Cătălin Savu, National College “Ion Luca Caragiale” It’s raining; Aida Mitroi, Bucharest International Informatics High School and Ciobotea Alexandru, Bucharest International Informatics High School.

The Romanian team was coordinated by university professor dr. Cătălin Gherghe from the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of the University of Bucharest (leader) and accompanied by professor Ovidiu Șontea from the National College “Tudor Vianu” from Bucharest (deputy).

BMO 2026 was attended by teams from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Serbia and Turkey (member countries), as well as teams from Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, France, Georgia, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Malaysia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Great Britain (guest countries).

At the level of the Ministry of Education and Research, the coordination of the Olympics was ensured by the Department of Olympics, Competitions, Partnerships and Extracurricular Education, through Mrs. Elisabeta Ana Naghi, MEC inspector.

“The Ministry of Education and Research supports the participation of our country’s national teams in the international Olympics by covering participation fees and travel costs, per diem related to the days of stay, as well as in the organization and running of the stages preceding the international Olympics – the local/county/municipal and national stages of these competitions”it is also shown in the message.
