A work signed by Constantin Brâncusi is approaching a possible historic performance on the international art market, ahead of an auction scheduled for Monday, May 17, in New York.
The “Danaida” sculpture, made in 1913 and covered with gold leaf, is estimated at 100 million dollars, an amount that could represent a record for the creations of the Romanian artist.
Until Monday’s auction, the work is on display at New York’s Rockefeller Center in an exhibition organized by Christie’s, where it attracts the attention of the public and collectors.
The promotion of the sculpture was also done through a video clip in which the actress Nicole Kidman appears. In the video, she visits the Christie’s galleries and stops in front of Brâncusi’s work, which she observes from several angles.
The exhibition remains open to the public until May 18, and “Danaida” is one of the centerpieces of the event. The work previously belonged to tycoon Samuel Irving Newhouse, who purchased it in 2002 for $18.2 million.
This time, the sculpture enters a large-scale auction in which works signed by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Andy Warhol will also be presented.
In the description of the auction house, “Danaida” is presented as a reference work for modern sculpture, with a strong symbolic and aesthetic dimension.
“The artistic alchemy of the work is both profound and transformative. The pure and essentialized form of the ‘Danaide’ is considered the birth of modern sculpture.” “Look at my sculptures until you can see them”, Brâncuși once said. The infinite sphere fixes the gaze, the circular forms seem endless, taking the viewer on a journey around the sculpture. A recognizable and at the same time timeless beauty, both contemporary and from distant ages”, it is shown in the presentation of the auction house.
