Former president Traian Băsescu declared on Tuesday, June 16, that he does not believe that the Veștea Government will pass the Parliament’s vote and that, in his opinion, “Nicusor Dan will have to make a third nomination”.
“Normally, there is no way for him to pass. I, from the appointment, when I learned about Mr. Vestea’s nomination, said that he would not pass. And now I am convinced that there is no way for him to pass.
Of course, my behavior is that of a normal person, who takes into account the statements of the leaders of the parliamentary parties. Because otherwise, they could simply go with excluded parties, say, from combinations such as extremist parties.
So, my opinion is that there is no way this government will pass and Nicușor Dan will have to make a third nomination”, said Traian Băsescu on B1 TV.
The former president says that the stake is whether Vestea withdraws his mandate or goes to a vote in Parliament and is rejected. In the second case, Romania would be approaching early elections, because only one nomination would be needed to pass the Parliament, he points out.
“The governments in which the PSD was in combination with the PNL were, in fact, PSD governments, even if the PNL was the prime minister. They were a key, as Mr. Bolojan well defined.”
We remind you that on Sunday, June 14, President Nicușor Dan announced that Eugen Tomac submitted his mandate, and Adrian Veștea, first vice-president of the PNL, was appointed prime minister in his place.
“He is a person who attracted European funds, concerned with development. For example, he developed the airport in Brașov, which is a success. He is a categorically pro-Western person, a person with values, open to dialogue, who has worked with budgets for a long time and is responsible for budgets.
I am convinced that he will successfully fulfill this task. I thank Eugen Tomac for the seriousness he showed, for his commitment and responsibility. Neither he nor I played for the government. It is clear that a political solution is the right one and I want to thank those who were prepared to be part of the Government“said the head of state.
Shortly after, the interim prime minister and president of the PNL, Ilie Bolojan, emphasized that the liberals were not consulted beforehand and announced the emergency convening of the National Political Bureau (BPN) to establish the official position of the PNL.
On Monday evening, the PNL adopted six binding decisions, rejecting both the support of the Government proposed by Adrian Veștea and the possibility of a government together with the PSD.
The decisions were taken following a tense meeting, in which the prime minister-designate was summoned to submit his mandate by Tuesday, at 10:00 a.m. Prime Minister-designate Adrian Veștea stated, on Monday evening, that he will not submit his mandate, after the PNL leadership decided that it would not support an executive led by him.
