The former liberal leader Crin Antonescu criticized the Extraordinary Congress of the PNL, which he appointed “Congress of Traitors”, criticizing both the party’s leadership and the way the party’s history is presented. An important part of his message is directed against Ilie Bolojan, whom Crin Antonescu accuses of lack of vision and a political approach “broken from the needs of the people”.
Crin Antonescu states that in the last 36 years he has not met “a more appropriate form for the word treason” than the internal event of the liberals, accusing “imposture, shamelessness and the falsification of history”.
Criticism of the way of organizing the Congress
Crin Antonescu claims that during the Congress the history of the PNL was selectively presented, by inviting or mentioning only some former leaders, while other important names from the history of the party were ignored.
He mentions, in this context, the former prime ministers Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu, Florin Cîțu and Nicolae Ciucă, claiming that they would have been “deleted from official discourse”, while other political figures considered more convenient by the current leadership are invoked.
“Treason through the falsification, in the purest communist style, of history. They invoke, at every step, the history and continuity of the PNL, but only the former presidents who betrayed the PNL for Băsescu (Stoica, Stolojan) or Nicușor (Orban) are invited. Tăriceanu (under whose government Romania entered the EU and which launched Bolojan into politics) did not exist. I (the candidate, the faces, of the PNL Bolojan at presidency, a year ago. We are no longer members of the PNL. But he is also kicked out by Nicușor. But neither Florin Cîțu nor Nicolae Ciucă were a candidate for the PNL. Also, the former liberal leader criticizes the presence of speeches given by current members of the party, such as Robert Sighiartău, who he says would rewrite the history of the party.
“Betrayal through the vile silence of the old liberals present in the hall when someone like Sighiartău (a child of balls at the height of bassism in the golden age) makes the history of the 37 years of the PNL. In the same way, Mr. Ciucu talks about the relations between politicians-parties-system (services, justice). He speaks beautifully. It’s as if I hear myself in 2009. So much so that, from then until today, Mr. Ciucu “fought” alongside Monica Macovei, Băsescu and all the morally degraded elements (basist propaganda/hashtag) that destroyed what democracy existed in Romania”. added the former Liberal leader.
Accusations against the new PNL leadership
An important part of the message is directed against Ilie Bolojan, whom Crin Antonescu accuses of lack of vision and a political approach “broken from the needs of the people”.
He also criticizes the selection criteria within the party, which he describes as a combination of political loyalties and opportunism, at the expense of meritocracy.
The message also targets other political leaders from the liberal zone or from the old governments, such as Ludovic Orban, Traian Băsescu and Monica Macovei, whom Antonescu associates with controversial political stages in Romania’s recent history.
