The teachers will take to the streets again on Thursday, June 24, the same day they will submit to the Parliament the 160,000 signatures collected for a citizens’ initiative, by which they demand the annulment of the austerity measures in Education.
They will gather in front of the Parliament Palace, at Alveola Parcului Izvor, between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Following the submission of the signatures, the teachers expect the Parliament to initiate a legislative initiative to cancel “the anti-destructive education provisions imposed by Law No. 141/2025”.
According to the press release issued on Wednesday, the trade unionists have a wide range of demands:
“The draft law comes to correct the legislative slippages of recent years and ensure a quality educational act, stipulating several essential measures, including:
• Combating school overcrowding: We support the reduction and strict regulation of the number of beneficiaries per class/group. For example, in primary education, a class must have a maximum of 22 students, in the secondary school a maximum of 26 students, and in the high school a maximum of 26 students.
• The correct calculation for hourly rates in the hourly payment regime: we support the return to the method of calculation before Law no. 141/2025.
• Respect for the experience at the department: We request the return to the didactic norm before Law no. 141/2025 and reducing it by two hours for teachers with first degree and over 25 years of experience.
• Stimulating teaching in disadvantaged areas: We support the granting, starting from the 2026-2027 school year, of a non-taxable installation bonus equivalent to 3 basic salaries to teaching staff who start their tenure in isolated or disadvantaged areas, provided they stay on the job for 5 years.
• No simultaneous education in the 8th grade: We support the separate organization of the 8th grade, regardless of the number of students. Equal opportunities for all!
• Supporting young people and excellence (Higher Education): Students from a double major didactic degree or a didactic master’s degree will receive scholarships equal to the net salary of a beginning teacher. Also, the high school students who won medals at the international Olympiads will keep their scholarship of excellence throughout their undergraduate studies in Romania, if they maintain their performance.”
