The head of state explained, on Wednesday evening, in front of journalists, that the discussions so far have already outlined the direction of the future government formula.

“We had, as you know, a round of talks yesterday and it was concluded that we will have a pro-Western, minority government”said Nicușor Dan, emphasizing that the parties have entered the stage where they must present the conditions for supporting such an executive.

According to the president, the political formations have undertaken to support a future minority government.

Nicușor Dan added that the process must be completed quickly: “This is where we are and I hope they are serious about concluding as soon as possible”.

Deadline for conclusions: Friday

Asked when the appointment of the prime minister could take place, Nicușor Dan stated that the parties must clarify their positions in the next two days.

“They should discuss with each other tomorrow and come to me with the conclusions on Friday”the president said.

Journalists pressed if there was a chance the appointment could take place over the weekend, but the head of state avoided advancing a deadline.

“Let’s see what the parties agree on”the president said.

We remind you that, following the failure of the investiture of the Veștea cabinet, President Nicușor Dan carried out a new round of consultations on Tuesday with a view to installing a cabinet with full powers at the Victoria Palace. Two main scenarios remained on the table. The first aims at a minority government led by PSD, supported in Parliament by PNL, USR and UDMR. The second goes in the opposite direction, with PNL in the position of strength and PSD in the role of external supporter, a variant rejected on Monday evening by Sorin Grindeanu

Wednesday, June 24, The PSD National Permanent Bureau met online and decided to support Sorin Grindeanu for the position of prime minister.

“The PSD will have full autonomy over the government program. If there will be a PSD government, it will be a government that is not afraid and that will not stand with its hat in hand in front of anyone.PSD will play exclusively on its own hand. The objective is simple: economic recovery and the regaining of Romanians’ trust in the political class. (…) I reject any pact on functions, only on ideas that provide prosperity”, Grindeanu announced.

MEP Siegfried Mureșan, vice-president of the PNL, said on Wednesday that the liberals could vote for a government led by Sorin Grindeanu only in exchange for firm commitments regarding the deficit and reforms, but the party will remain in the opposition and will strictly monitor every decision of the future executive.

USR advanced a new proposal for overcoming the political crisis. According to the Minister of Defense, Radu Miruță, the considered solution involves a rotation between two minority government formulas, one formed by PNL, USR and UDMR, and the other represented by a single-color PSD cabinet.

Miruță’s proposal angered the social democrats, who accused USR of sabotaging the formation of the new Government:

“The claim ‘rotary’ The USR is actually a petty trick by which it always changes the conditions to make the result impossible and actually masks the desperation to take advantage of positions and sinecures in the state. Nothing else!”.
