A green or red emoticon will alert drivers if they have slowed down enough when entering towns. The systems are part of a CNAIR project to increase road safety and will be installed in 145 points in the country.
The National Road Infrastructure Administration Company (CNAIR) has announced the continuation of the installation of traffic calming islands, as part of a project financed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). Of the 145 systems that will be installed at the national level, 18 are located within the scope of the Regional Directorate of Roads and Bridges (DRDP) Craiova.
“Keep the emoticon on green! Safety starts with a simple choice: reduce speed when entering the locality. As part of a project financed by PNRR, to increase road safety, 145 traffic calming islands will be installed at the national level, 18 of which are within the DRDP Craiova radius. A large part of them are already installed, and the works will continue until all locations are completed”CNAIR transmitted.
The Regional Directorate of Roads and Bridges Craiova has published on its Facebook page a video in which the new systems are presented and how they work.
According to CNAIR, the location of the traffic calming islands was made following road safety analyses, in areas where accidents have been recorded or where there is a high risk for traffic participants.
“The locations were not chosen randomly. These systems are located in areas identified following road safety analyses, where, over time, accidents have occurred or where there is a high risk for road users,” company representatives said.
How the new systems work
The new installations are designed to get drivers to slow down before entering towns, where traffic is more complex and the risk of accidents is higher.
“The red carpet and electronic display warn drivers that they are entering an area where it is necessary to reduce speed. There are pedestrians, cyclists, carts, tillers, agricultural machinery and other slow vehicles in the towns, and attention must be maximum.” states CNAIR.
The electronic panel displays the speed at which the car is traveling and signals it with a colored emoticon.
“The display indicates the speed of travel and signals it visually: green means that the speed is adapted, and red draws attention that it is too high for the area you are in. At night, the area is illuminated with LED lighting fixtures, for increased visibility and effective driver attention.” the company also sent.
The systems work independently of the electrical network, being powered by energy produced by photovoltaic panels.
