A 54-year-old man from Oradea found an unusual solution to cope with the sweltering temperatures this summer. The owner of a two-room apartment, he has been sleeping for several weeks in the basement of the building, where the temperature is much more bearable than in his home.
The Oradean, a former athlete and security guard, initially tried to keep the heat away from the apartment by covering the windows with reflective film. However, the efforts were insufficient, and on hot days the temperature in the house reached between 30 and 36 degrees Celsius.
“I put foil in the window, the aluminum one, but to no avail. Depending on the time, it’s between 30 and 36 degrees in the house”the man told, for the Ebihorean.
Lucian laid out the basement of his block about eight years ago, initially to store some tools. This summer, the space has turned into a real refuge from the heat.
“As long as I was arrested in the army, here is the reign. I have all the conditions. (…) The morning is so cool that I get cold. This morning I put my duvet on me”, the man said.
Lucian usually goes down to the basement after 10 p.m., after taking a shower in the apartment. On days with extreme temperatures, he also retreats there in the afternoon for a few hours of rest.
“If it’s bad and it’s hot outside, I don’t stay in the house to cook. I go downstairs and take a nap. When it’s hot, it’s normal to go somewhere in the shade”he explained, for the cited publication.
Bihor County has experienced several consecutive days of heatwave, with meteorologists warning of temperatures that can reach 41 degrees Celsius, high thermal discomfort and tropical nights.
