Meta, the company that owns Facebook, announced that during assessments by an independent testing company it allowed one of its artificial intelligence (AI) models to connect to the Internet and compromise another organization’s system.
According to the BBC, the announcement comes after recent incidents in the AI industry, including breaches of models developed by OpenAI and Anthropic, which have raised concerns about cyber security.
A spokesperson for Meta told the BBC that the company is investigating the incident, caused by a “wrong configuration”which it claims is similar to other previously reported incidents at other companies.
These incidents have led researchers and government officials to call for stricter safeguards and more rigorous testing.
Meta said the security tests were conducted by Irregular, the same AI security company that also conducted the tests for the Anthropic model, after which it gained access to the systems of three other companies.
A spokesperson for Irregular said the Meta incident “it’s the exact same test environment issue that was already disclosed by Anthropic last week.”
Irregular is currently working on a report on how to safely conduct cyber security tests involving AI agents, the company told the BBC.
Meta also said it will release more information about the incident “after we have all the facts”.
The incident Meta is referring to is where advanced artificial intelligence models developed by Anthropic and OpenAI created fake identities online and tried to mislead programmers into unknowingly participating in a cyber attack during a recent security assessment.
“This is the first time that AISI has observed deceptive behavior of such gravity, directed against a real person, without an explicit, real-world impetus”said a 35-page technical report published Tuesday along with a blog post.
According to the UK’s AI Safety and Security Institute (AISI), the malicious activity began on July 25.
Assessors caught it and launched an investigation on July 28 after noticing “unusual data transfers” derived from a cyber evaluation of the Mythos 5 and ChatGPT 5.6 models.
