Member of the NSN Development Team, Finlay Tarling died following an accident suffered during the eighth stage of the Tour of Portugal. The announcement was made by the race organizers.
The darkest fears of the participants were thus confirmed. In a statement published on Instagram, “the organizers of the 87th edition of the Tour of Portugal announced with deep sadness the death of British road rider Finlay Tarling, from the NSN Development team, following a serious accident during the 8th stage, held between Melgaço and Fafe”.
The stage was neutralized (time no longer mattered), and the award ceremony was no longer held, “out of respect and as a sign of mourning”. According to the Portuguese daily “A Bola*, the 19-year-old rider was hit by an oncoming vehicle that was not part of the official Tour of Portugal column. The race was stopped at 16:50, while the peloton was about twenty kilometers from the finish line.
Tarling was a time trial specialist who had been drafted into the NSN team last year. Born in Wales in 2006, Finlay was the brother of Joshua (22), a rider for the Netcompany-Ineos team and European time trial champion in 2023. The eldest of the Tarling family had achieved promising results, including top finishes at the Tour of Rwanda and a 3rd place in the under-23 time trial at the British Championships. “It is with a heavy heart that we announce today the death of Finlay Tarling in the Volta a Portugal race”, stated his team. “Fin was a much-loved member of our team, but most of all, he was a son, a brother and a friend to so many people. He will be greatly missed.”
A statement was also issued by those overseeing the “Volta a Portugal”: “In these moments of deep dismay, the organizers of the Tour of Portugal and the Portuguese Cycling Federation send their sincere condolences to the family of Finlay Tarling, his teammates, the NSN Development team, as well as all friends and relatives. The organizers will provide additional information as soon as circumstances allow.”
Portuguese president Antonio Jose Seguro sent his condolences, saying Tarling’s death “plunged the peloton, the competition and the host country into mourning”.
