The Ministry of Education announced on Sunday, August 16, that Romanian students won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals at the International Informatics Olympiad (IOI) 2026.
“2nd place worldwide, in the historical medal ranking, for Romania, following the results of the Olympics International Informatics (IOI) 2026! This year, the Romanian students obtained one gold, one silver and two bronze medals!”the institution announced.
According to the ministry, Rareș-Andrei Neculau, a 12th grade student at the “Vasile Alecsandri” Galati National College, won the gold medal.
The silver medal was obtained by Mihai-Valeriu Voicu, also in the twelfth grade, Bucharest International Theoretical High School of Informatics. Alexandru Dima, a student in the same high school, also in the twelfth grade, obtained a bronze medal.
Andrei-Paul Iorgulescu, student in the 11th grade at the “Tudor Vianu” National College of Informatics, Bucharest, also obtained a bronze medal,
“The high scores obtained by Rareș-Andrei Neculau and Mihai-Valeriu Voicu represent the third best historical performance of Romania in the individual ranking of the competition. Through these performances, Romania maintains its top positions in the official long-term hierarchies managed by the International Olympiad in Informatics Statistics:
- 2nd place in the world in the all-time ranking by the total number of medals collected during the historical participations.
- 7th place in the value ranking of medals (established according to the weight of gold, silver and bronze awards).
An essential role in this continuity is played by the close collaboration between the Ministry of Education and Research and the Society for Excellence and Performance in Computing (SEPI)”
The Ministry of Education and Research states that the Romanian team was accompanied to Uzbekistan by Prof. Adrian Panaete, as Team Leader, and Luca Perju-Verzotti, Deputy Leader, and the coordination of the participation was ensured by the Directorate of Olympics, Competitions, Partnerships and Extracurricular Education.
“Beyond the course of the students, this edition brought a professional recognition for the Romanian technical staff.
Professor Adrian Panaete was personally presented with the Long Service Award, offered by the international community as a sign of appreciation for the team’s involvement and management throughout 7 editions of the International Informatics Olympiad.”
The Romanian ambassador to Tashkent, Daniel Cristian Ciobanu, was with the national team at the International Informatics Olympiad in Uzbekistan.
“The Ministry of Education and Research supports the participation of our country’s national teams in the international Olympics by covering participation fees and travel costs, per diem related to the days of stay, as well as in the organization and running of the stages preceding the international Olympics – the local/county/municipal and national stages of these competitions.”
