The second meeting of the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Saturday 15 August was disrupted by a British police operation. A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of fraud. For this reason, award ceremonies were postponed, and some athletes and spectators could not leave the arena for some time.
The incident occurred in the area of the Alexander Stadium, after the authorities discovered a man who had an improper accreditation. Additional security measures were adopted and transport for staff and athletes was temporarily suspended.
Participants in the European Athletics Championships have been informed that none of the six scheduled award ceremonies will take place. Since no clear information was provided, sometimes contradictory rumors circulated, only being known that “a security incident” occurred. Which also caused some fear.
At the end of the meeting, public transport in the area was stopped, and many spectators were stranded for a long time on the vast esplanade in front of the Alexander Stadium. And it must be said that the arena was almost full, reaching its maximum capacity of 20,000 seats. The vast majority of spectators who came to the stadium used public transport, and this is because there are no parking spaces available in the area. Those who had come on foot or by car were able to leave the stadium without problems through other exits. A large presence of law enforcement was noted. And according to the onlookers’ account, the police were armed, which in Britain only happens in serious cases.
According to the British media, several athletes, including the British Amy Hunt, and thousands of spectators had to wait over an hour before they could leave the stadium. However, West Midlands Police said there was no imminent danger to the public and thanked viewers for their patience.
Transport services returned to normal on Sunday morning, the organizers of the competition announced.
This morning, European Athletics issued a statement confirming an “incident involving the police” the previous evening. “Championship-related transportation has been suspended pending the implementation of necessary security measures, while Ak police have arrested a man in his 30s in connection with an alleged fraud case.” A West Midlands Police spokesman confirmed the arrest of the man, who remains in police custody.
